Rock man, originally uploaded by Focal Intent.

A number of the trails around the old lava flows in Volcano National Park had these little rock piles as trail markers.

More from the lava flows and craters

I love this little guy!

He reminds me a bit of the small granite sculptures that people made on top of half dome. (You can see a few of them on my flickrstream if you care. Either way, this guys is awesome!)

I don't think these are really trail markers. (Or at least, they're not just trail markers.) Usually sculptures of rock like this in Hawaii indicate a sacred site.

Reminds me of a cross between the figure they're using for the winter olympics and the piles of stone in some locations there.

He is! He's an inukshuk!!! which is like the funnest word ever to say :)
And the purpose of inukshuks are to be trail markers and guide posts - especially in areas where the natural landscape doesn't leave much to go by.

The 2010 guy is called "Ilanaaq" which is the Inuit word for friend. Man I need to get out of here - I know way too much about this.
